Nörenberg – Schröder Marriage

Michael Nörenberg (c. 1840-1895) and Louise Schröder (c. 1845-1909) were the parents of Konstantin Nörenberg. In Polish records, their names may be spelling Michał and Ludwika. In Russian: Майкл and Луиза.

What is known of their marriage?

Michael Nörenberg and Louise Schröder’s marriage record is from the Central Archives in Warsaw.1Elisabethpol, Rozyszcze Parish; Włodzimierz (Wołyń), Marriage Records, Michael Nöhrenberg and Louise Richert, 16 Jun3 1883, digital images, Archiwum Glowne Akt Dawnych (AGAD) The Central Archives of Historical Records in Warsaw, http://agadd.home.net.pl/metrykalia/439/sygn.%2041/pages/PL_1_439_41_0330.htm: accessed 11 October 2021.

1883 Marriage of Michael Nöhrenberg and Louise (Schröder) Richert

This record provides some details about the couple:

  • Groom: Nöhrenberg, Michael Schmiedmeister [master blacksmith], of Elisabethpol, 40, widower of Louise Ziemer
  • Bride: Louise Richert, born Schröder, of Elisabethpol, 38, widow of Gottfried Richert
  • Marriage banns proclaimed in May and June, marriage on 16 June 1883 in Elisabethpol
  • Elisabethpol, Rozyszcze Parish Kreise Wladimir [abbreviated K. Wl.]

This record lines up with their son Konstantin’s Elisabethpol birth record: right location, right time.
Unfortunately for us researchers, the parents of the bride and of the groom are not listed.
Since the marriage was recorded after 3 Banns [Aufgebot], there are no witnesses; the assembled congregation bore witness. (Individual witnesses often provide clues to familial and close relationships.)

According to this 1883 marriage record, both Michael and Louise were previously married.

Michael’s First Marriage

The first place to look for a marriage record is in the town where Michael was born. However, no birth record has been discovered (to date). As discussed last week, the majority of the birth and none of the marriage records from the Brzeziny parish exist.

Therefore, one must dig deeper for evidence of the marriage of Michael Nörenberg and Louise/Ludwika Ziemer in  other documents.

What’s Next?

Join the conversation next week, as we follow Michael’s documented trail through eastern Europe.
Schmiedmeister? Really? Will other documents confirm his occupation as a blacksmith?
Did Konstantin have half-siblings?
When and where did Louise Schröder marry Gottfried Richert?
