John Haden, Patriot

Haden family research is built upon the foundation of many talented and thorough cousins, notably:

  • Edith Attkisson Rudder, author of My Father’s Family (1947)
  • Dorothy Kabler Haden, author of John Haden of Virginia (1968)
  • Kay Haden, researcher and blogger at Leaves of the Tree and More Leaves
  • Mark Hayden, map maker and Find a Grave Contributor for Joseph Haden and others

The exhaustive research of these cousins built a solid and reliable foundation for my work.

A few weeks ago, I examined the patriotic life of Captain Joseph Haden. This week, let’s look at his father.

John Haden

Joseph’s father, John Haden (1723-1817) served his community. In his mid-50s, John was one of 21 men sworn in as members of the first Grand Jury of Fluvanna County, Virginia.1Fluvanna County VA Order Book, 1777, pages 11-12. November 4, 1777. During the American Revolution, Fluvanna became a County on July 1, 1777.

This was patriotic service. As a Grand Juror, John Haden provided civil service under the authority of the new government of the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Fluvanna Court Record 1777

A Grand Inquest for the Body of this County [Fluvanna] being impannelled [sic], the court appointed Tunstal Quarles foreman who was sworn, and then the rest of the Jury to wit: James Coles, Thos. Amos & Henry Heslop who were also sworn, and having rec’d their charge withdrew and after some time ret’d and made their presentments. Ordered the Several offenders be summoned to appear at the next Court to answer the same.

Providing Supplies

During the Revolutionary War supplies were procured from Virginia citizens by purchase, loan, impressment or force. After the war, citizens like John Haden submitted their claims to the Fluvanna County Court.

On April 6, 1782, John requested reimbursement for 337.5 pounds of beef that he provided to Thomas Napier’s company.

John Haden presented a Cert. dated 1st May last [1781] under H’o [hand of] T. Napier __ Comd’r. for 37 1/2 # Beef at 2 pence/lb, also another ditto [Cert.] same dated Nov’r 25th last [1781] for 300 # Beef for P use for which he is allowed 2 pence/lb.
