Fleischhacker – Klein Marriage
When noodling about a new blog topic, I realized that I have not highlighted my dear husband’s ancestors lately. For the next 4 weeks, I’ll write about the Fleischhacker family.
Burgenland
The Fleischhacker ancestors lived in Burgenland (literally, castle-land). In the current geo-political landscape, Burgenland is one of Austria’s nine states. This narrow, eastern region shares borders with Slovakia, Slovenia and Hungary.
In the 1880s, Burgenland was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and ruled by the House of Habsburg. Today, citizens of the Burgenland speak German, Croatian and Hungarian.
The Burgenland Bunch website has a wealth of genealogical information about this multi-ethnic region, including the village of Apetlon (called Bánfalu in Hungarian).
Marriage

When looking at this marriage entry, we look at the whole page because several key details are found above entry #12.2Gracious transcription and translation provided by members of the Genealogical Translation Facebook Group, 26 August 2022.

To date, this is the oldest photograph I have of Joseph and Susanna. (A copy of a photographic copy.) The handwritten label at the bottom reads Mother – Dad; the photographer’s mark is incomplete. I assume that Susanna and Joseph are pictured with their first two daughters (Mary, born in 1889 and Catherine, who died in August of 1891). Their son Joseph was born May 26, 1891; he is not in the photo. So, the photo could possibly be dated 1890 or very early 1891.
More Research
In the next couple of weeks, I’ll relate the story of Joseph and Susanna immigrating to America.
Do you have a photo of the couple?
